I don't know anything about it but my sister went through it a few years ago. I am kind of concerned that if I do conceive, my risks are higher because we are related. My mother said she had it as well but with only 2 of the 4 of us. I am just wondering if there are ways of preventing it if the cause is known.

I don't think they have been able to find the root cause of it because it is different for different women.
I found a list of the most common causes doctors have ruled out to be factored in the chances of developing this kind of depression: - personal or family history of depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder - stress during pregnancy or after giving birth - previous pregnancies - pregnancy loss or stillbirth - asthma - lack of social or family support - history of trauma or adverse life events - complications during pregnancy or childbirth, including illness, preterm labor, or having a baby with health concerns or other special needs - giving birth between the ages of 13 and 19 years - alcohol or substance use

From what I have read, the most common cause is stress but more and more doctors are believing it has to do with how great your hormones shift after pregnancy. Some women have such a big swing that it alters their mood, memory, and basic functions.

I am sure you can go to a pregnancy nutritionist and they can tell you what to eat, what to take, and what to avoid. I remember reading certain foods/drinks can bring this on in women if they consume said items later in pregnancy but stress does seem to be the biggest factor.
